Four Arrested Following Fatal Shooting at Mississippi Homecoming Game
Authorities have arrested four individuals linked to the shooting at a homecoming football game in Mississippi, which resulted in six fatalities and numerous injuries.
Tevyon L. Powell, 29, William Bryant, 29, and Morgan Lattimore, 25, face charges of secret murder. LaToya A. Powell, 44, has been charged with attempted murder, according to a spokesperson from the FBI’s Jackson field office on Monday.
This week, the FBI sought assistance from the public in finding four people associated with the incident.
On Sunday, officials released images of a woman and three men captured on surveillance as “unidentified suspects.”
They also mentioned that additional arrests could be forthcoming.
The shooting took place around midnight on Main Street in Leland, as reported by Mayor John Lee.
The victims who died at the scene include Oleshama Johnson, 41; Calvin Plant, 19; Shelbiona Powell, 25; and Kathryn Johnson, 18, according to the county coroner.
Amos Brantley, 18, and Ja’Michael Jones, 34, succumbed to their injuries later at a hospital.
Ten more individuals received treatment at local hospitals, but their identities remain confidential.
A number of the victims were recent graduates of Leland High School, attending a reunion during the school’s annual homecoming game.
Witnesses described the scene as chaotic, with one attendee, Jennifer Buckner, mentioning that the first few shots did not immediately disrupt the gathering, but soon after, panic ensued.
“The gunfire lasted for about 10 minutes. People just started running,” she recounted.
The FBI indicated that the shooting seemed to stem from a disagreement among several individuals, although the specific motivation has not been disclosed.
In a separate incident that same night in Heidelberg, two more fatalities were reported at a different homecoming football game.
Authorities found two bodies, including that of a pregnant woman, on the Heidelberg High School campus during the game night, but it’s unclear when the shots were fired or if they were close to the stadium.
An 18-year-old suspect has been charged with two counts of murder and illegal firearm possession in relation to that shooting, according to jail records.
