Elderly Woman Accused of Shooting Husband in Nursing Home Left Mysterious Note

Incident at South Carolina Nursing Home

An 82-year-old woman, Harriet Kay Recker, is implicated in the fatal shooting of her 81-year-old husband, Dennis Recker, at a nursing home in South Carolina. This tragic event occurred on September 12 at the Preston Health Center. According to reports, a neighbor who drove Harriet to the center that morning noticed that Dennis needed an additional chair in her room.

A staff member went to retrieve the chair when a loud noise was heard. The neighbor later returned to find Dennis with a gunshot wound to the chest, while Harriet was allegedly found holding a revolver. Reportedly, Dennis, who had been admitted to the center the day before for medical concerns, uttered, “She shot me” before passing away at the scene.

The shooting took place around 10:30 a.m., leading law enforcement to respond promptly after they received reports of gunfire at the facility.

During the investigation, authorities apparently discovered a note in Harriet’s wallet that corresponded with another note found with financial documents at her residence. This evidence suggested the possibility that the incident had been premeditated. Part of the note reportedly expressed feelings of being overwhelmed: “For all of you, this is too much for me. I wish we could do it with our wonderful family… Someone can’t be me because I’m not strong enough or smart enough to do all this.”

Harriet faces charges of murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime, currently being held at the Beaufort County Jail without bail.

Ted Duemo, a pest control service provider for the couple, expressed his shock at Harriet’s arrest, stating, “When I saw her picture, I was stunned. I thought there was no way this woman would do what they were saying.” He described her as a kind person who would go out of her way to help, recalling how she would often chat with him and offer him snacks and water.

The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office has not commented on the matter as of yet.
