Meghan Markle Discusses Social Media Experience
Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, shared her thoughts on the significance of being a positive presence online during her appearance at the Fortune Most Powerful Women Summit in Washington.
“I’ve had a really complicated relationship with social media,” the 44-year-old, who hosts Netflix’s “With Love, Meghan,” remarked. She also acknowledged how integral it is to the business world.
Building on this, Meghan, who tied the knot with Prince Harry in 2018, mentioned to Fortune’s editor-in-chief, Alison Shontell, that both she and her husband spend considerable time contemplating the risks posed by the internet, particularly for vulnerable children. “We’re committed to safeguarding not just our own kids, but all children who are exposed to potential online harms,” she added.
“It’s important to be on the side of good in these spaces, and there’s real value in that,” she continued.
The former “Suits” actress noted plans to broaden her lifestyle brand, As Ever, in digital domains.
Meghan returned to Instagram in January after a year-long break due to significant online scrutiny following her wedding.
In 2020, Meghan and Harry stepped back from full-time royal duties and relocated to California, advocating for improved content moderation policies on social media platforms.
Laughing, Meghan reflected, “The last time I was on Instagram, Boomerang was all the rage. That feels like ages ago.” She added, “So I started getting back into it in January, just like everyone else, but I’m being a bit more cautious.”
To protect her mental well-being, Meghan has disabled comments on her Instagram posts but engages with some followers through handwritten notes. “I thought it would be nice to find creative ways to connect and show I’m listening,” she explained.
Despite her Instagram comeback, Meghan voiced some hesitation about joining TikTok. When asked about it, she simply said, “I don’t know.”
