Legendary Soul Singer D’Angelo Passes Away from Pancreatic Cancer
Renowned soul artist D’Angelo has died at 51, with pancreatic cancer being confirmed as the cause of death. His passing was reported on Tuesday after he spent time in a New York City hospice.
Sources indicate that while he had been in hospice for two weeks, his hospitalization extended over several months as he battled the illness.
D’Angelo’s family shared news of his death and described his fight against cancer as “long and courageous.” In their statement, they reflected on his legacy, saying, “Our family’s shining star dimmed its light for us in this life. While we are saddened that he will only leave us with cherished memories, we are forever grateful for the extraordinary and inspiring musical legacy he left behind.”
They also requested privacy during this trying time, while inviting others to join them in mourning and celebrating his contributions to music.
The artist, whose real name was Michael Eugene Archer, is survived by three children: son Michael Jr., daughter Imani, and son Morocco. Imani expressed her grief on Instagram, posting a nostalgic photo of herself with her father, who was known for his soulful sound.
Michael Jr. and Morocco have not yet publicly commented on their father’s passing. Earlier this year, Michael Jr. faced heartbreak with the loss of his mother, Angie Stone, in a car accident. Stone inspired D’Angelo’s iconic debut album, Brown Sugar, which features the beloved track “Lady.”
D’Angelo was also known for hits like “Untitled (How Does It Feel)” and “Really Love.” Before his health declined, he was reportedly working on a new album, showcasing his passion for music. His longtime collaborator, Rafael Saadiq, had noted in a recent interview that D’Angelo was engaged in several productions and seemed optimistic about his artistic direction.
