Spike in Hostility Towards ICE Officers
Recently, there has been a concerning increase in attacks against federal law enforcement, highlighted by a shooting at a Dallas facility. In a voicemail that surfaced, a caller expressed mockery towards immigration officials, stating, “I hope those lawless bastards are arrested one by one.”
The message, reportedly from a man, also remarked, “It’s always the bad guys who need masks, not the good ones.” The caller’s disdain particularly targeted ICE agents, wishing them public humiliation for their actions.
Data from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) indicates that assaults against ICE officers have surged, showing a staggering 1,000 percent increase.
Recent Incident in Dallas
On September 24th, a man named Joshua Jahn allegedly shot at an ICE facility in Dallas, resulting in two deaths and one injury. Reports indicate that Jahn was found with bullets labeled “anti-ICE” and had left a note at his residence describing ICE agents in derogatory terms and declaring his intent to “maximize lethality” against them.
In a response to the voicemail, DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin noted that the hostile rhetoric directed at ICE, comparing them to the Gestapo and other oppressive groups, leads to real-world consequences. She emphasized the need to stop the dehumanization of officers enforcing the law.
Threatening Behavior and Community Concerns
McLaughlin remarked, “These threats against our ICE officers and their families are disturbing. These officers risk their lives daily.” She reminded people that ICE agents, like everyone else, simply wish to return home safely to their loved ones.
The DHS has urged those in positions of influence to temper their language as assaults and threats against ICE personnel appear to be on the rise. For example, a spouse of an ICE officer in Texas received a hateful message questioning how they could live with the knowledge of their partner’s work.
The caller had also uttered chilling comments, insinuating consequences akin to post-World War II retribution for Nazis, directed towards the officer’s family.
Recent Legal Actions Against Protesters
In a related incident, three women were charged for live-streaming the pursuits of ICE agents and sharing their addresses on social media. They reportedly harassed ICE officers, shouting messages that revealed their home locations.
Acting U.S. Attorney Bill Esseri commented on the actions of these defendants, labeling their behavior as deeply troubling. He affirmed that anyone who threatens or intimidates law enforcement will face severe legal repercussions.
