Unauthorized immigrants detained after assault on Border Patrol vehicle in Chicago, according to authorities.

Officials confirmed on Wednesday that undocumented immigrants were involved in an attack on a Border Patrol convoy in Chicago, escalating into a car chase and subsequent riot. They pointed to a “growing and dangerous” trend of violence aimed at federal agents.

The Department of Homeland Security reported that Yondel Enrique Tenefe Perez and Luis Gerardo Pirera Ramirez, both Venezuelans residing in the U.S. illegally, have been named as the suspects responsible for slamming into a Border Patrol SUV on the Southeast Side of the city.

Arrested shortly after the incident, the situation spiraled out of control, resulting in a car crash and a group of protesters launching objects at federal officers.

“This isn’t just an isolated incident. It reflects a troubling trend of illegal immigrants violently resisting arrest and attacking law enforcement with their vehicles,” a spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security stated.

He further emphasized that “the involvement of two illegal immigrants in this attack underscores the necessity for federal enforcement to continue upholding our country’s laws.”

After the collision, Pirela-Ramirez and Tenefe-Perez sped away, leading Border Patrol agents on a pursuit through residential areas.

Law enforcement eventually managed to stop their vehicle using a PIT maneuver, but the suspects exited and fled on foot.

Although they were apprehended, a disruptive crowd formed around the arresting officers, throwing various items at them.

Law enforcement was compelled to deploy tear gas as the crowd grew increasingly hostile, allowing them to take control of the chaotic scene.

“As the Border Patrol attempted to detain the individuals and secure the area, a crowd began to assemble and eventually turned aggressive, prompting crowd control measures,” DHS explained.

The Border Patrol SUV, significantly damaged in the attack, had to be towed away afterward.

During the confrontation, several law enforcement officers were impacted by tear gas, and two American teenagers were arrested amidst the turmoil.

This incident adds to a series of alarming confrontations in Chicago where cars have been driven into immigration enforcement convoys, often accompanied by tense crowds. Just earlier this month, a suspect reportedly tried to run over officers, resulting in a tragic shooting.

President Trump has suggested that such acts of violence indicate a need for the National Guard to protect federal immigration agents in the city. Although Guard troops were deployed to Illinois recently, a federal judge put a two-week hold on their deployment, keeping them stationed outside of Chicago.
