Abigail Spanberger, the Democratic candidate for governor in Virginia, is still selling merchandise that features the names of fellow candidates, including Jay Jones, who is facing scrutiny due to a recent scandal. On a visit to her campaign store, it was noted that items like “Spanberger Hashmi Jones Logo T-Shirts,” priced at $25, and bumper stickers for $10, remain available for sale.
The merchandise also includes various themed items supporting Spanberger’s gubernatorial campaign, such as Pride-themed shirts and gear promoting alliances like “Republicans for Spanberger.” The Republican Governors Association (RGA), backing Spanberger’s opponent, Lt. Gov. Winsome Earl Sears, criticized her for continuing to sell products related to Jones despite his controversial behavior, which included threats against Republican figures and their children.
Colin Crompton, the RGA Rapid Response Director, expressed disbelief over Spanberger’s support for Jones and questioned her commitment to addressing political violence. He pointed out that despite the controversy, Spanberger and her team have maintained their stance to run individual campaigns, as indicated during a recent debate in Norfolk.
RGA further commented on social media about the ongoing sale of merchandise tied to Jones, highlighting his troubling comments. They insisted that Spanberger’s continued support complicates her reliability as a candidate.
While Spanberger’s campaign has not publicly addressed inquiries regarding this issue, she has been clear in her condemnation of violence in politics, labeling Jones’s comments as “abhorrent.” She stated, “I have condemned political violence…regardless of who is in charge.” Meanwhile, she also defended her earlier remarks urging political engagement, clarifying that it was not meant to incite violence. Amidst the criticism, it seems Spanberger is navigating a challenging political landscape as she pushes toward the gubernatorial election.
