Man charged with igniting Palisades Fire indicted by federal grand jury

Man Indicted for Starting Deadly Palisades Fire in Los Angeles

A federal grand jury has indicted a man in connection with the Palisades fire that caused devastation in Los Angeles earlier this year.

The accused, Jonathan Linderknecht, age 29, is believed to have ignited the Lachman fire just after midnight on January 1st. After dropping off an Uber passenger, Linderknecht reportedly drove to the Skull Rock Trailhead while listening to a rap song featuring imagery of people being set on fire, as outlined by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California.

After allegedly starting the fire, Linderknecht attempted to call 911 several times, but his phone was out of range. Local residents then alerted authorities, prompting Linderknecht to leave the scene, only to return later to take video footage.

The Lachman Fire intensified when strong winds fanned the underground flames, transforming into the Palisades Fire on January 7th. According to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, the Palisades Fire scorched 23,448 acres between January 7th and 31st, resulting in the deaths of at least 12 individuals and the destruction of 6,837 structures.

Once a resident of Pacific Palisades, California, Linderknecht now resides in Melbourne, Florida. He was arrested last week at his home, alongside Bill Esseri, Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Central District of California. They stated, “While nothing can restore what the victims lost, we hope this criminal case will bring some measure of justice to those affected by this terrible tragedy.”

The U.S. Attorney’s Office disclosed that investigators relied on eyewitness accounts, surveillance footage, cell phone records, and an analysis of the scene to conclude that Linderknecht was responsible for the fire. Additionally, it was noted that he provided false information about his location during a police interview on January 24.

Linderknecht faces charges including criminal damage to property by fire, arson involving interstate commerce, and wood arson.

If found guilty, he may face a minimum of five years in federal prison, with potential sentences reaching up to 45 years, as indicated in the announcement of his indictment. He is expected to appear in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles for arraignment in the upcoming weeks.
