U.S. tourist fatally attacked, another critically hurt in stabbing incident in Portugal

An American tourist was tragically killed, and another was seriously injured in Portugal during the early hours of Wednesday. The incident, it seems, stemmed from a heated verbal exchange.

Details from Portuguese judicial police indicated that the situation escalated from a disagreement involving three suspects and the two tourists into a violent brawl.

During the fight, one of the suspects went to his vehicle, retrieved a knife, and allegedly attacked both tourists.

Authorities mentioned that one of the assailants struck the victim multiple times in the face, arms, and back before fleeing the scene.

Emergency services arrived quickly, trying to save the man, but his injuries were critical and involved vital organs.

Sadly, he was pronounced dead on-site.

A second victim was taken to Santa María Hospital in Lisbon, suffering from serious cuts to his face and arms. His condition was critical at first but has reportedly stabilized since.

The identities of the victims have not been disclosed yet.

The surviving victim recounted to the police that the three suspects approached him without any prior interaction, with one trying to provocatively touch his hat.

When he asked the man to stop, he was punched, which seemingly ignited the violent altercation.

After the incident, he called out for help from his fiancée, who was at a nearby nightclub.

Authorities announced that a suspect has been arrested in connection to the stabbing. Investigators, however, have ruled out robbery or any hate crime motives in this case.

Only one person has been charged so far—a 23-year-old Portuguese man who works at a local bar and has no criminal history. The investigation is ongoing, and officials continue to gather evidence.

A spokesperson from the State Department emphasized their commitment to ensuring the safety of Americans abroad and stated they are prepared to offer consular assistance.

This stabbing incident comes just days after the State Department released a revised travel advisory for the Maldives, warning travelers that “terrorist groups can attack with little or no warning,” especially in remote areas where emergency responses may be delayed.
