Cuomo Ready to Challenge Mamdani in NYC Debate

Andrew Cuomo is gearing up to launch a series of criticisms at Zoran Mamdani during the first mayoral debate of New York City’s general election on Thursday. The former governor aims to close the gap with the leading candidate.

Political analysts suggest Cuomo will focus his attacks on Mamdani’s far-left policies and his controversial associations, particularly a photograph of him with anti-LGBTQ Ugandan officials. “Cuomo will definitely aim to disrupt Mamdani’s campaign and label him as the extremist he claims he is,” remarked Andrew Kurtzman from consulting firm Actum.

However, it’s important to note that Mamdani, who has proven to be quick on his feet throughout this campaign, hasn’t stumbled at any pivotal moment yet, making the situation a bit tricky for Cuomo.

Cuomo, who resigned as governor in 2021 amid various scandals, must navigate carefully to appeal to uncertain voters. Experts believe he needs to strike a balance between aggressive attacks and avoiding the perception of arrogance.

Mamdani, a congressman from Queens who got his start in the state Legislature in 2020, will be on stage in a much different role than when he was relatively unknown during the Democratic primary debates. Since securing the nomination in June, Mamdani has gained a solid lead in the polls, though none show he has surpassed the 50% mark among voters. Meanwhile, Cuomo, now running as an independent, has garnered additional support since Mayor Eric Adams exited his reelection attempt last month.

Political insiders suggested that Cuomo will likely spotlight the contentious July photograph of Mamdani with Rebecca Kadaga, who has advocated for more stringent laws against homosexuality in Uganda. The debate will also feature Curtis Sliwa, a Republican candidate known for his extensive experience in radio, which could sway some viewers.

There’s speculation about whether Cuomo and Sliwa might form an unexpected alliance that could disadvantage Mamdani. Observers pointed out that if they can manage to collaborate effectively, it could put Mamdani on the defensive. However, one political figure cautioned that if the debate devolves into mere bickering, it won’t help any candidate’s standing.

Opinions vary, with some claiming that while the debate won’t necessarily influence voter opinions significantly, it will likely provide entertainment. “People have likely already made up their minds about the candidates,” noted Ken Friedman, a seasoned Democratic strategist.

Viewers should keep in mind that NBC will broadcast only the first hour of the debate live on cable before switching to a three-hour “Law & Order” slot. For those wanting to continue watching, it will shift to digital streaming afterward.
