Trump to Meet with Putin Ahead of Zelensky Visit
President Donald Trump is set to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday, just before his planned face-to-face with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Washington, D.C.
This meeting was hinted at by Trump earlier in the week, following news of Zelensky’s upcoming trip to the U.S. to seek advanced long-range Tomahawk missiles.
Securing these missiles is crucial for Zelensky, as they could potentially reach deep into Russian territory. This capability may not only bolster Ukraine’s military effectiveness but also target Russia’s oil sector, which is vital for funding its military efforts.
Trump’s announcement of the meeting with Putin came shortly after reports of missile and drone strikes by Russia affecting Ukrainian cities and energy infrastructure. Early Thursday, multiple attacks were reported, and Zelensky stated that over 300 drones and 37 missiles had been launched, causing injuries and prompting rescue operations across various locations.
Zelensky noted that Russia appears to be employing “double terror” tactics, particularly targeting emergency responders with drones laden with cluster munitions. He expressed that the ongoing assaults on Ukraine’s energy systems are being carried out relentlessly in the fall.
Furthermore, there have been warnings from the Kremlin that any U.S. decision to provide long-range missiles to Ukraine could lead to serious repercussions.
In light of these developments, Zelensky’s visit aims to discuss strategies with Trump and U.S. defense officials to intensify pressure on Putin and counteract his military aggression.
During the upcoming discussions, topics will likely include the addition of more Patriot missiles, alongside the possible provision of Tomahawk missiles, although Trump has yet to confirm any specific decisions.
