Patel: FBI agents will continue to receive pay during shutdown

FBI Director Affirms Compensation for Agents During Shutdown

FBI Director Kash Patel reaffirmed his previous comments made in the Oval Office, stating that FBI personnel would receive their compensation despite the ongoing federal shutdown.

“FBI special agents will continue to be compensated because we prioritize those who protect our nation,” Patel shared in a post on Thursday. He highlighted President Trump’s commitment to ensuring law enforcement and military members received their paychecks during similar government shutdowns in the past.

His remarks included a reference to Trump’s promises regarding compensation for federal workers, emphasizing the importance of maintaining national security.

Patel expressed to Trump that the FBI “owes us a great debt” regarding the payment of agents amid the shutdown, as he underscored the need for continuous funding for essential operations.

Although the Justice Department did not disclose how the funding would be managed, they affirmed that FBI employees would still receive their pay, noting that none were furloughed during this period.

Trump has also expressed intentions to ensure military personnel are compensated, suggesting he might utilize previously allocated funds for that purpose without needing Congressional approval.

“We paid the people we wanted,” Trump stated, emphasizing his desire for both FBI and military employees to receive payments.

However, Trump’s approach appears inconsistent compared to his stance on furloughed federal workers. A recent memo from the White House Office of Management and Budget indicated that those furloughed might not secure back pay, despite existing laws that typically guarantee such payments after a government shutdown.

Concerns have been raised about the repercussions of the shutdown on the FBI’s operations. The FBI Agents Association cautioned that ongoing budget issues could limit crucial activities such as travel, recruitment, and training, ultimately affecting investigations and collaboration with other law enforcement agencies.

While the FBI Agents Association thanked Trump for addressing compensation, accusations emerged from Democrats who felt that his selective commitment to pay certain federal workers reflected a heavy-handed approach.

Rep. Jim Himes (D-Conn.) voiced his concerns on CBS, suggesting that a legislative solution was necessary to ensure military pay during the shutdown, criticizing the current inaction from the House Speaker.

“Yes, Donald Trump will speak out, but it seems like very little is actually changing,” he added, reflecting the ongoing uncertainty surrounding federal employee compensation.
