Trump Announces Efforts to Make IVF More Affordable
On Thursday, President Donald Trump revealed a new initiative aimed at expanding access to in vitro fertilization (IVF) by reducing costs.
This initiative focuses on two main objectives: cutting drug prices and making IVF treatments more affordable for women who wish to conceive but face financial hurdles.
In a statement from the Oval Office, Trump expressed his commitment to helping couples start families. “In the Trump Administration, we want to make it easier for couples to have babies, raise children, and start the families they’ve always dreamed of,” he said.
He mentioned that EMD Serono, a leading manufacturer of fertility medications, has agreed to lower the prices of the fertility drugs it offers in the U.S. This agreement includes Gonal F, which is used to treat infertility in both women and men.
Dr. Mehmet Oz, who oversees the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, made a lighthearted remark, saying, “We’re going to have a lot of Trump babies, and I think that’s probably a good thing.”
President Trump noted that a single round of IVF can often cost as much as $25,000 in the U.S., and many couples may need several rounds to achieve a successful pregnancy.
“Based on the results of these negotiations, we are pleased to announce that families will see a 42-79% reduction in infertility drug costs for a standard IVF cycle, depending on the patient’s income,” officials reported.
Looking ahead, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) indicated that by 2024, the cost for a single IVF cycle might range from $15,000 to $20,000, and in some cases, could exceed $30,000.
The HHS added, “Given that the average number of IVF cycles required to achieve a pregnancy is 2.5, this means that the average cost of IVF to achieve a successful pregnancy can easily exceed $40,000.”
EMD Serono’s vice president, Libby Horn, welcomed the announcement, highlighting that one in eight couples experience infertility. “We are proud to announce that through our partnership with the government, Americans will now have access to our leading IVF treatment at an 84% discount off list price,” she stated.
This initiative follows an executive order Trump signed in February, directing federal agencies to explore ways to reduce the costs associated with IVF.
During his campaign, Trump had promised to implement free IVF treatment for women if he were to secure a second term. He provided credit to Sen. Katie Britt (R-Alabama) for her active involvement in addressing the access issue surrounding IVF.
In a show of support, Britt remarked, “This is the most pro-IVF action ever taken by a president in American history,” while standing alongside Trump as he made the announcement.
