Bronx Man Released on Bail After Alleged Assaults
A man wielding a pipe, who is said to have gone on a five-hour violent spree in the Bronx that included attacks on two women and a teenage girl, was granted bail on Thursday by the same judge who had placed him under supervised release during a recent court appearance.
Jeremiah White faces felony attempted murder charges after reportedly attacking a nurse on her way to work. This incident took place early Wednesday morning when he allegedly punched her and held a metal pipe to her head, as noted by the Bronx District Attorney’s Office.
White is also accused of striking a 15-year-old girl with such force that she bled significantly from her head. Additionally, he allegedly punched another woman before law enforcement apprehended him later that day.
According to reports, the 23-year-old was roaming the streets due to New York state’s relaxed bail laws, having previously been charged with a similar random assault on another woman.
He had been arrested on October 7 for a different assault on a woman, and again on September 12 in connection with an attack on a teen riding the subway near the 174th Street station.
During his arraignment on October 8, Bronx Judge Deidre Moore released him, stating the misdemeanor assault charge was non-bailable but allowed for supervised release at the request of the prosecutors.
At White’s latest arraignment on Thursday, bail was set at $200,000 in cash. He faces charges including attempted murder, attempted rape, first-degree assault, second-degree assault, and weapon possession.
The disturbance began around 5:20 a.m. when White targeted a nurse named Virginia Alvarez at West 175th Street and University Avenue. Bronx Assistant District Attorney Badeanand Nowrang described how White knocked her to the ground with a single punch.
As Alvarez struggled to get up, he reportedly continued to hit her repeatedly before coming back with the metal pipe, swinging at her head even as she raised her hands in defense.
Alvarez reportedly sustained multiple fractures in her hands and face, requiring staples in the back of her head.
Approximately two hours later, White confronted the 15-year-old girl on her way to school in Crotona Park East. He allegedly brandished a metal object while cautioning her to “be careful” before striking her on the head, causing significant bleeding and a concussion that required stitches.
His rampage concluded around 10 a.m., when he allegedly approached a 54-year-old woman and punched her “square in the face” outside an apartment complex in Claremont.
Nowrang expressed concern about White’s pattern of targeting women at random, claiming it created a climate of fear for women in the Bronx. White’s next court appearance is set for October 20 at 10 a.m.
