Rama Duwaj, the wife of artist Zoran Mamdani, was seen leading a pottery workshop in a popular Brooklyn area on Thursday night, while her husband was engaged in a heated New York mayoral debate.
Instead of being at the debate, Ms. Duwaj, 28, chose to host a class on ceramic tile design at Huda, a trendy Levantine restaurant in East Williamsburg. This workshop, which had tickets priced at $95, started at 5 p.m. and wrapped up at 7:30 p.m.—just half an hour after Mamdani took the stage for the debate alongside Andrew Cuomo and Curtis Sliwa.
Images show Duwaj, dressed in black and adorned with gold jewelry, as she stood in front of a display featuring sample underpaintings for pottery.
The event page indicated that the workshop’s theme was “Fruit Iconography with Damascene Tile Design,” allowing attendees to create their own ceramic tiles to bring home.
Meanwhile, across the river, Mamdani, 33, was responding to pointed criticisms from former Governor Cuomo, who seemed to avoid clear answers to challenging questions.
Duwaj was part of a four-week workshop series at Huda, as per a schedule shared on the restaurant’s Instagram. It’s unclear how long this workshop was planned ahead of the debate.
Curiously, while Mamdani was battling it out on stage, Cuomo is currently divorced, and Sliwa’s wife attended a debate at NBC’s 30 Rock.
Mamdani and Duwaj first connected via Hinge in 2021. Duwaj, originally from Texas with Syrian roots, is a potter and illustrator whose recent work has featured in publications like New York Magazine.
The couple recently celebrated their marriage in a grand ceremony after four years of dating. They live in a rent-stabilized apartment in Astoria, Queens.
