Proposal for Bering Strait Tunnel
The Kremlin has put forward an idea for a rail tunnel connecting Russia and the United States beneath the Bering Strait, dubbed the “Putin-Trump” tunnel. This concept was introduced by Kirill Dmitriev, a key investment official close to President Vladimir Putin.
Dmitriev, who leads the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF), shared details about the proposal, which was reported by Reuters. The plan suggests that Elon Musk’s Boring Company might construct around 70 miles of rail and freight tunnels within eight years, with an estimated cost of about $8 billion. Funding would come from Moscow and “international partners,” according to Dmitriev.
“The vision of linking the United States and Russia through the Bering Strait has persisted for years, from the Siberian-Alaska Railway idea in 1904 to more recent proposals in 2007,” he noted in a post on X, previously known as Twitter. He explained that RDIF is exploring various proposals involving rail systems across several countries, including the U.S., Canada, Russia, and China, to identify the most feasible options.
This initiative follows a recent phone conversation between former President Donald Trump and President Putin, wherein they agreed to meet in Budapest to discuss potential solutions for the ongoing war in Ukraine.
The Bering Strait notably separates Russia from Alaska, where the Diomede Islands sit just 3.4 miles apart—one under U.S. control and the other Russian.
Dmitriev highlighted the potential of The Boring Company, emphasizing its tunneling technology, which he believes could significantly lower construction expenses. He mentioned, “Imagine a 70-mile tunnel that connects the U.S. and Russia, symbolizing unity. While traditional costs exceed $65 billion, we could bring it down to under $8 billion with @boringcompany’s technology. Let’s work together to create the future.”
FOX News Digital has sought a response from the White House regarding this proposal.
