Family of slain grandfather experiences shock and disbelief

A cherished Italian grandfather and security guard, Nicola Tanzi, was laid to rest on Saturday in a Brooklyn church, surrounded by laughter and tears. His funeral took place at St. Dominic Catholic Church in Bensonhurst, where about 200 family members and friends gathered to honor his life.

Tanzi, a devout Catholic who was 64, was fatally attacked while holding the door for a suspect on October 7, as reported by police. His nephew shared his shock and sadness with attendees, expressing anger at a world where such violence can occur against someone so good.

“It’s easy to slip into frustration and blame,” he said, “but today, let’s remember Uncle Nicky and how he lived, as an example for us all.”

Tanzi was punched twice at the Jay Street Metrotech location, and police have identified David Mazariegos, a man with multiple unresolved criminal cases, as the assailant. A video has surfaced showing Mazariegos kicking Tanzi repeatedly while he lay on the ground. He has yet to enter a plea regarding these charges.

The emotional service was attended by Republican mayoral candidate Curtis Sliwa and was punctuated by the sounds of sniffles and prayer as parishioners sang hymns with the accompaniment of an organ.

Describing his uncle, the nephew recalled how Tanzi and his grandmother shared moments of laughter, navigating between speaking Italian and offering support during family gatherings. Family was paramount to Tanzi, who would rearrange his work schedule for baptisms and special occasions, and even run out early to secure beloved treats.

The family patriarch was described as “anachronistic,” as he lacked a car, a cell phone, and preferred not to use credit cards. Yet his loyalty to family traditions remained unwavering.

“He didn’t follow modern trends, but his commitment to his family was unwavering,” his nephew added, sharing nostalgic memories of Christmas traditions filled with food and laughter.

The nephew highlighted Tanzi’s jovial nature, sharing humorous memories, including his uncle’s classic “dad jokes.” As an example, he recalled a time when a large platter of food arrived at the table, prompting Tanzi to quip, “Where’s everyone else’s food?”

Despite the tragedy surrounding his death, the family chose to focus on celebrating Tanzi’s life rather than dwelling on the fear produced by it. The murder suspect, currently charged with first-degree murder, was reportedly enrolled in a diversion program aimed at repeat offenders, engaged in bizarre artwork depicting violence.

The nephew concluded his remarks by urging attendees to pray for Tanzi and embrace their loved ones. “Enjoy your favorite foods and take time to reflect on the joyful moments,” he suggested, echoing what he believed his uncle would want.
