State Department Warns of Potential Hamas Attacks
The State Department has issued a warning regarding “credible reports” indicating that Hamas may conduct attacks on residents in Gaza, posing a serious threat to the ongoing ceasefire agreement between Hamas and Israel.
In a message shared on social media, the State Department noted that they had informed the “guarantors of the Gaza peace agreement” about these reports. They stressed that Hamas’ intended actions against Palestinian civilians would represent a significant violation of the ceasefire terms.
The agency further indicated that, should Hamas proceed with these attacks, measures would be implemented to ensure the safety of Gaza’s inhabitants.
In their communication, the State Department stated, “The United States has notified the guarantors of the Gaza Peace Agreement of credible reports indicating imminent violations of the ceasefire by Hamas against the Gaza population. This planned attack on Palestinian civilians would constitute a direct and serious violation of the ceasefire agreement and undermine the important progress achieved through mediation efforts.”
The official also emphasized that the guarantors expect Hamas to uphold its commitments under the ceasefire’s terms.
Furthermore, the posting mentioned that if Hamas continues with its plans, steps would be taken to protect Gaza residents and to uphold the ceasefire. The commitment to civilian safety and the pursuit of peace in Gaza and the broader region was reiterated.
This statement coincided with Hamas and Islamic Jihad’s refusal to agree to disarmament this week, following an effort by President Trump to negotiate a peace deal between Israel and Hamas. As a part of this agreement, Hamas had released the last remaining Israeli hostage.
Reports indicated that the ongoing denials from these groups reveal the fragile nature of the current ceasefire. The situation suggests that both organizations may be prepared to remain armed indefinitely while seeking political demands that Israel has historically rejected.
It was also reported that, after the peace agreement was initiated, Hamas executed Palestinians they labeled as “criminals and Israeli collaborators.”
