Santos Reacts to Commutation Controversy
Former congressman George Santos expressed frustration during a recent CNN interview when questioned about his sentence commutation by President Donald Trump. He noted that critics would always be present, “clutching their pearls,” especially concerning President Joe Biden’s pardons for his family before leaving office.
Trump referred to Santos as a “sort of villain” while still asserting that he would “always vote Republican.” This statement led to accusations of blatant partisan favoritism against Trump.
In the interview on “State of the Union,” CNN’s Dana Bash informed Santos that many people felt unhappy about his reduced sentence, viewing it as preferential treatment due to his loyalty to Trump. Santos responded, sharing his annoyance at the scrutiny and pointed out Biden’s controversial decision to pardon his son, Hunter Biden, despite earlier promises not to do so.
“You know what?” Santos began. “I hate that we have to go down this path. A lot of people are angry at President Biden for his unprecedented pardoning of his family. So, forgive me if I’m not too focused on the outrage of my critics, mainly from the left.”
Additionally, Santos remarked that he felt no anger over criticisms aimed at Trump for his pardon decisions. “There were a lot of people licking their wounds,” he reflected, acknowledging the harsh criticism thrown at the former president for supposed dishonesty in his promises. “Look, there’s always going to be detractors. Some will like me, others won’t. It doesn’t matter who gets pardoned. That’s just how it is.”
After being released from his seven-year prison sentence this year for aggravated identity theft and wire fraud, Santos has been vocal about his gratitude towards Trump. He previously admitted to fabricating parts of his resume, raising campaign funds through fraudulent means, and spending illicitly obtained donations on personal items, including expensive clothing.
Despite his checkered past, Santos believes that discussions around presidential pardons will always prompt polarized opinions. His recent remarks and actions underscore a blend of gratitude and defiance in the face of ongoing critiques.
