San Jose Sharks Issue Apology Over Controversial Message

The San Jose Sharks issued an apology on Saturday after a pro-Ice message related to American Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) appeared on the scoreboard during their Hispanic Heritage Night event at the SAP Center. The displayed message read, “SJ Sharks fans love ICE!! Get’emBoyz!” which raised eyebrows among attendees.

Following their game against the Pittsburgh Penguins, which ended in a 3-0 defeat for the Sharks, the team shared a statement on social media. They noted, “During the first intermission, a message with offensive language was incorrectly shown on the scoreboard. Our review process failed to catch it. This message does not align with our values.” The statement continued, “We sincerely apologize for this oversight and are currently working to identify how this occurred.”

ICE enforcement activities have sparked heated discussions in California lately. In Los Angeles County, officials recently declared a local state of emergency in light of ICE’s actions. County representatives stated that the operations have “created a climate of fear,” affecting daily life and the local economy. Reports of reduced workplace attendance, temporary business closures, and increased pressure on schools and healthcare facilities were highlighted as part of the fallout.

Additionally, San Jose City Council members took a stance by passing a policy requiring ICE officers to remove their masks during operations, emphasizing transparency.
