Daniel Jones Leads Colts to Strong Start
Daniel Jones has significantly boosted the Colts’ offense, helping them achieve a 6-1 record in his inaugural season with the team.
This development isn’t particularly surprising for the former Giants quarterback. When CBS Sports’ Evan Washburn inquired on Sunday about what league officials should recognize regarding the rising Colts, who might not have been attentive at the start of the season, Jones had a clear message for critics following their 38-24 victory over the Chargers.
“I don’t think you guys knew much about it,” Jones remarked playfully. “We’re just going to keep pushing ahead. There’s a lot of confidence in this team. We have plenty of talented players who truly put in the effort and stay committed to doing the right things.”
Jones seems to have moved past his tumultuous time with the Giants. On Sunday, he threw for 288 yards, completing 23 of 34 passes, while tossing two touchdowns. Strikingly, he now has 10 interceptions for the season, with three occurring over seven games.
“We’re aiming for high-level execution,” Jones stated. “I think we’re thoroughly prepared for these encounters. Our coaching staff outlines a solid game plan, and we’ve managed to execute it effectively.”
It’s impressive to see Jones performing at such a high level—a comeback that seemed unlikely just a year ago.
In his final year with the Giants, the former Duke player had a rough start, completing 63.3% of his passes and ending with a disappointing 2-8 record before being put on the bench in favor of Tommy DeVito.
Jones received his release last November and is set to join the Vikings in late 2024.
He subsequently signed a one-year, $14 million contract with the Colts, winning the starting job over first-round pick Anthony Richardson during the offseason.
Coach Shane Steichen, who has previously praised Jones’ preparation, commended his team, now enjoying a significant lead in the AFC South standings.
“Our staff excels in preparing for and adapting to various looks,” he noted. “I have a lot of respect for the Chargers’ defense and what they accomplish. They’re quite strong. Kudos to them and their coaching staff. I believe our players are performing admirably.”
Next up, the Colts are set to face the Titans, who currently hold a 1-6 record.
