Illinois State University dismisses teaching assistant for overturning TPUSA table

An Illinois State University teaching assistant was terminated after being filmed knocking over tables set up by Turning Point USA and destroying their flyers.

The university confirmed on Monday that Derek Lopez, 27, had been dismissed from his role as a graduate teaching assistant while investigations continue.

Lopez was caught on video interacting with another individual near a table where the conservative group was advertising an appearance by political comedian Alex Stein. He was heard saying, “Well, since Jesus did it, I know I have to do it too, right?” before flipping a table. After this, he added, “Thank you, everyone, have a nice day,” as he walked away.

Additionally, he was reported to have disrupted another information table organized by a student group, according to Illinois State University police.

Lopez was arrested on Friday and is facing charges of disorderly conduct and criminal damage to property, with the case still pending. Authorities noted that this could lead to further charges or university discipline.

On a related note, Oklahoma State University reaffirmed its dedication to free speech during a recent incident involving a student feeling threatened over remaining silent at a memorial service for conservative commentator Charlie Kirk. The university underscored its recognition of the diverse perspectives present on campus and emphasized civil discourse in the face of opposing views. Campus police reiterated their commitment to safeguarding First Amendment rights and ensuring the safety of all community members. They encouraged everyone to better understand their free speech rights and responsibilities within the university context.
