Georgia Man Arrested for Shooting Incident in North Carolina
A man from Georgia, Benjamin Michael Campbell, age 37, has been arrested after reportedly taking down a Trump 2024 banner and firing shots at a home in North Carolina, according to officials.
Campbell was taken into custody in Georgia on September 30 and extradited to North Carolina on October 7, as noted by the Swain County Sheriff’s Office. He’s facing serious felony charges, including assault with a deadly weapon, discharging a firearm to incite fear, and causing intentional damage to property.
On September 6, while speeding in North Carolina’s Nantahala Valley, Campbell noticed a flag in the front yard of a man named Mark Thomas. After ripping down the banner, he allegedly shot several rounds from his car’s sunroof, narrowly missing Thomas. Video footage of the incident has since surfaced.
Thomas recounted the moment, saying, “He was driving, saw the sign, slammed on the brakes—there was a political trigger—and he just had to take the sign down.” Such drastic reactions seem a bit outrageous, don’t you think?
Authorities were called to the scene, but by the time they arrived, Campbell had already left in his vehicle.
Later, investigators found video of the incident posted online, which Thomas had shared. He mentioned being a Trump supporter and that he keeps a weapon for protection. “If I can’t have it when I need it, it’s no good,” he stated, explaining he reached for his rifle during the incident.
Interestingly, Thomas drew a comparison between this shooting and the recent murder of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk, suggesting that it reflects a growing trend. “It’s the same type of people behind both shootings,” he noted, pointing out that such incidents seem to be becoming more common.
