Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns dismiss excitement surrounding the Knicks

Excitement Surrounds Knicks as New Season Approaches

It’s been a while since the Knicks have entered a season with this much buzz, reminiscent of the Yankees’ glory days. Their prospects look favorable, with expectations high as they aim for the NBA Finals. The core group that made it to the Eastern Conference Finals is back, now bolstered by a strengthened bench featuring players like Jordan Clarkson and Gershon Yabusele.

However, for captain Jalen Brunson, all that chatter? It’s just noise. He’s keen on staying focused. “I ignore it because it doesn’t mean anything,” the point guard shared after practice on Monday. “My focus is on practice, film, and getting better each day. I don’t have time to think about how people perceive us.”

Teammate Karl-Anthony Towns echoes a similar sentiment, noting that what’s predicted doesn’t guarantee results.

While there’s anticipation of a showdown between the Knicks and Cavaliers for the top spot in the conference, the season is unpredictable. Just last fall, few anticipated the Pacers to emerge as contenders in the East.

“It’s like looking into a crystal ball and hoping it all plays out as expected,” Towns remarked. “We need to take care of our team, and that’s where our focus should lie.”

This season kicks off with an exciting match-up on Wednesday night as the Knicks face the Cavaliers and Donovan Mitchell. It’s a perfect early test for the Knicks under new coach Mike Brown. Even if stars like Mitchell Robinson and Josh Hart aren’t playing, it’s an opportunity to measure themselves against top-tier competition.

“This is a good test. It helps us improve,” Towns said. “Both teams want to see how they stack up against the best. Competing against strong teams reveals where we stand and what we need to work on. We just have to give it our all.”

It’ll be interesting to see how the Knicks perform. They had a decent 4-1 run during preseason, but not everything clicked. Some key players—including Towns, Hart, Robinson, and OG Anunoby—sat out the final rehearsal against the Hornets. Coach Brown has indicated that acclimating to the new fast-paced style may take some time.

Despite familiar faces in the lineup and rising anticipation from fans, there’s still uncertainty about how their gameplay will translate when it counts.

“Some things remain the same, but other elements have changed. Yes, we have the same core, but there are new pieces,” Brunson noted. “The coaching is different, the voices have shifted, yet our mentality and approach must stay consistent.”

“We want to win, improve, and learn. Those factors may vary, but our goals remain the same.”

A year ago, the Knicks opened against the Celtics, and despite a poor performance by Boston, they eventually eliminated them in the playoffs. Wednesday night’s game is just the start.

“This is the first step, but I hope it leads us far,” Brunson concluded.
