NBC’s NBA Return Features Michael Jordan

This week, NBC is making a comeback to NBA broadcasting after more than two decades away, and it’s bringing some exciting news about Michael Jordan’s involvement. Ahead of Tuesday’s season-opening doubleheader, NBC Sports announced that the six-time NBA champion will be featured in “MJ: Insights to Excellence,” a series that includes interviews with Jordan and play-by-play commentator Mike Tirico during halftime of the Thunder vs. Rockets game, kicking off at 7:30 p.m.

Fans got a sneak peek of the “MJ: Insights to Excellence” segment during “Sunday Night Football.” This aired in the first half of Week 7, featuring a relaxed conversation between Tirico and Jordan.

In a surprise announcement back in May, Jordan was revealed to be joining NBC as a special contributor, despite previously showing little interest in the media side of things. It was initially reported that he would appear on pre-recorded segments throughout the season, providing analysis for pregame and halftime shows. The exact nature of his role might evolve, but as of now, that’s the plan.

Jordan, celebrated as a six-time NBA Finals MVP and five-time league MVP, had a stellar 15-season career, mainly with the Chicago Bulls, where he secured six championships during the 1990s. After hanging up his sneakers in 2003, he took on roles in team management, eventually becoming the majority owner of the Charlotte Hornets in 2010, before selling his majority stake in 2023.

Outside of basketball, he often enjoys vacations in the Mediterranean with his wife, Yvette Prieto, and they frequently appear in photos together aboard his megayacht during the summer months.

The NBA’s new 11-year media rights agreement with NBC was announced in the summer of 2024, paving the way for this exciting return. Tuesday’s doubleheader will wrap up with the Warriors facing off against the Lakers at 10 p.m. ET.
