Incident on Disney Cruise Dream
A tragic event unfolded on the Disney Dream cruise ship when a mother aimed to capture a lovely vacation moment. The 5-year-old girl reportedly jumped from the deck after being encouraged to climb into an open porthole, leading to a scary situation.
The rescue mission occurred around 11:30 a.m. on June 29, as the ship was operating in international waters between the Bahamas and Fort Lauderdale, Florida. According to the Broward Sheriff’s Office, the family had paused on the fourth deck for a photo of their daughter.
As detailed in a police report, the mother pointed to the porthole railing, and the girl climbed onto it, but unfortunately lost her balance and fell backwards into the ocean.
The girl fell about 49 feet from the ship. Her father, who hadn’t witnessed the fall, jumped into the water after his wife alerted him. Witnesses reported hearing a “Man Over Board” announcement over the loudspeaker, as crews rushed into action. A passenger shared on Facebook about the overwhelming support from those aboard, mentioning how many were praying for the little girl.
Fortunately, both the father and daughter were rescued. A medical evaluation revealed the girl experienced mild hypothermia, while the father suffered from both hypothermia and vertebral fractures. They were initially treated on the ship before being transferred to a medical center for further observation.
A memo from the Assistant State’s Attorney later indicated that the mother would not face charges of child neglect. While her actions were deemed irresponsible, it was described as a momentary lapse in judgment, and importantly, the child remained unharmed and help was sought promptly.
The girl’s previous swimming lessons were noted, although she hadn’t learned to swim effectively yet, and her height prevented her from activating the overboard alarm when she fell.
Timeline of Events:
- 11:30 a.m. — While the mother was taking pictures, the girl climbed on the railing and fell overboard. The father then jumped in after her, triggering emergency protocols.
- 11:37 a.m. — A mayday call was issued, which led to a rescue boat being deployed shortly after.
- 11:49 a.m. — Both father and daughter were successfully retrieved from the water.
- 11:59 a.m. — They were taken to the ship’s medical center for observation for several hours before being moved to Broward Health Medical Center.
Disney representatives promptly confirmed the incident and praised their crew for their rapid response, which ensured the safe return of the passengers.
