Outage affecting close to 150 apps on Amazon Web Services caused by a typical technology issue.

An extensive outage of Amazon Web Services (AWS) affected nearly 150 major websites and applications, including platforms like Snapchat, Venmo, and Roblox. This disruption, lasting about 15 hours, was attributed to a relatively common technical glitch involving “an underlying DNS issue,” according to AWS’s status tracker.

The trouble began with a mishap in the Domain Name System at one of Amazon’s large data centers in Virginia, which is noteworthy for housing their oldest facilities. These data centers are part of a vast network and consume a substantial amount of power, with a quarter of the state’s electrical supply used by facilities in the area.

DNS plays a crucial role in converting user-friendly domain names, such as nypost.com, into numerical Internet Protocol (IP) addresses. This process helps users easily access websites without memorizing complex codes.

Following the initial DNS error, additional complications arose that involved cloud computing services and network load balancers, which are meant to manage traffic among servers.

The outage impacted a significant number of platforms, totaling 142, with well-known services like Slack, Zoom, Coinbase, Hulu, and WhatsApp all relying on AWS for hosting and delivery. AWS reported that all services had been restored by 6 PM ET.

On social media, users responded to the outage with humorous memes, including one featuring Homer Simpson ominously suggesting that “the end is near.” Another popular clip showed him saying, “It’s okay now,” even as chaos ensued around him, humorously questioning, “What are we going to do now?”

This incident marks a major disruption for a cloud provider, although it’s not the first time AWS has faced such an event. It is one of the largest providers, alongside Microsoft’s Azure and Google Cloud.

To recall, back in July, Cloudflare dealt with a DNS outage caused by an internal configuration error, while Microsoft Azure and Akamai Edge also experienced similar issues in 2021.
