Colbert and Jean-Pierre Clash Over Biden’s Mental Acuity
CBS late-night host Stephen Colbert has recently found himself in a disagreement with former White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre. On Monday, she expressed her frustrations with Democrats, insisting that she sees no evidence of President Joe Biden’s mental decline.
Colbert, during the exchange, contended that he hadn’t noticed any decline in Biden throughout his presidency. However, he did express concern over Biden’s performance during a solo debate with Donald Trump, which he described as troubling.
Jean-Pierre responded strongly, stating, “No one said he didn’t grow old. What I’m talking about is whether he has the mental acuity, the ability to govern. The person I met almost every day was engaging, had a firm grasp on policy, and prioritized the American people.”
Despite her assurances, Colbert remained unconvinced. He reflected on how the debate was personal for many viewers, including himself, who had supported Biden. He noted a significant change in Biden’s demeanor, especially considering his age of 81, which understandably concerned many people.
Colbert added, “I don’t think anyone questions his heart or his policies. Yet, being president requires more than that. Under the pressure of the moment, we saw something that alarmed us, and unfortunately, there was nothing to alleviate that worry.” He emphasized that it wasn’t a betrayal of Biden but rather that viewers didn’t get to see the same figure Jean-Pierre did.
Jean-Pierre characterized the criticism and calls for Biden’s resignation as “a truly ugly attack on a man with over 50 years of experience who has done a commendable job as president.” She described witnessing such behavior as heartbreaking.
Colbert didn’t hold back, saying, “Disappointed is a very mild word. It was miserable. Look, I appreciate you being here, but I don’t think we’re going to come to an agreement on this.”
Jean-Pierre revealed that she was so hurt by the demands for Biden to resign and withdraw from the race that she contemplated leaving the Democratic Party. She mentioned a “cloud of anxiety” that made her reconsider her alignment with the party.
In another interview, she claimed Biden was an astute leader, although host Tony Dokoupil questioned her confidence in that assertion. He suggested it seemed strange that she would encourage Biden to drop out if he was truly struggling.
Dokoupil noted that some Americans might find her claims hard to believe, to which co-host Gayle King added she was also skeptical that Biden’s team couldn’t see any signs of decline.
