California Republicans propose voter ID ballot measure for 2026

California Republicans are initiating a plan to mandate voter identification for those casting ballots. Representative Carl DeMaio is spearheading fundraising for this push through his group, Reform California, which requires 875,000 signatures to secure a place on the 2026 ballot.

DeMaio expressed to NBC Bay Area that “Voter ID is not only about reinforcing internal controls and enhancing procedures, but also about rebuilding public trust in our democratic process.” He noted concerns among residents regarding election conduct, citing the difficulty in proving voter fraud due to the lack of sufficient checks and balances.

As of now, over 300,000 signatures have been gathered for the petition, leaving 129 days to collect an additional 575,000 signatures. Currently, 36 states enforce some form of voter ID law, with 24 of these requiring photo identification.

This initiative follows President Donald Trump’s earlier attempt to implement stricter identification protocols through an Executive Order on Election Integrity, which mandated proof of citizenship for voters. However, a court ruling invalidated these requirements earlier this year. Judge Colleen Koller-Kotelly of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia determined that Trump lacked the authority to impose such regulations, indicating that control over election laws belongs to Congress and state governments.

Koller-Kotelly outlined that Congress is engaged in discussions about legislation that could impact many reforms proposed by the President, emphasizing that executive power shouldn’t bypass necessary legislative processes.

A Gallup poll from just before the 2024 elections revealed that a significant majority—84% of American adults—favor requiring voters to show identification, while 83% support the idea of proof of citizenship for first-time registrants.
