Drunken Driving Incident Leads to Manslaughter Trial
A Houston woman, known for her love of cars, was involved in a tragic incident when she drove her $150,000 Porsche while intoxicated, striking a man on a date, as recounted by one of her passengers.
Arlette Reyes testified in Christina Chambers’ manslaughter trial that after meeting Chambers at a bar, they experienced a horrifying event that resulted in the death of Joe McMullen on April 20, 2023.
Chambers attributed the crash to her high-heeled shoes, claiming they slipped off the brake and pushed the accelerator as they collided with McMullen, who was exiting a donut shop during his first date.
At Lola’s Depot, a local bar, Chambers expressed her status as an influencer and noted that her husband, a hedge fund manager, had purchased her the Porsche 911 Carrera just two months prior.
“I thought I could ride,” Reyes remarked when addressing the jury, sharing her disbelief at the situation.
Chambers was known to flaunt her wealth, residing in a $1.6 million modern home with her husband, Xuan Shi, who filed for divorce following her arrest.
The evening took a dark turn when Chambers, Reyes, and another friend jumped into the sports car for a drive home. However, the drunk driver, who had been bar-hopping that night, went too fast, missed a turn, and veered into oncoming traffic, according to Reyes.
“I was either praying or just wondering why I was there,” the witness explained.
Reyes recounted witnessing a man and woman on the sidewalk as the car sped toward them, stating, “Everything happened so quickly.” She realized she couldn’t do anything to prevent the impact.
She now knows that the couple they struck included McMullen, 33, and Brianna Iturino, who narrowly avoided harm during the incident.
Prosecutors concluded their witness testimony with Reyes, while Chambers’ defense began to present experts on toxicology. Prosecutor Andrew Figliuzzi informed jurors that Chambers was eager to showcase her luxury vehicle despite showing signs of severe intoxication.
Chambers’ blood alcohol content was 0.301% an hour after the crash, nearly four times the legal limit, and traces of cocaine were also detected in her system.
Chambers’ attorney argued that the heel of her designer shoe caught on the gas pedal just as she attempted to navigate one of Houston’s most treacherous curves.
Earlier, Officer Joseph Little testified that Chambers had spent a significant amount that night, reportedly $800 on exquisite dining and drinks, including a $669 meal at a high-end restaurant.
She had visited at least four bars, with prosecutors estimating she had consumed no less than six alcoholic beverages.
Both Chambers and Reyes were hospitalized following the accident, and if convicted, Chambers faces a potential 20-year prison sentence.
