Fetterman Willing to Break Party Lines for Government Reopening

Senator John Fetterman from Pennsylvania expressed on “Hannity” that he’s ready to “pay the price” to push for the government’s reopening, even if that means distancing himself from his party. This announcement comes as the government shutdown enters its fourth week.

“I will always prioritize the country over party,” Fetterman stated. “If that costs me support within my base, then so be it.”

Fetterman has openly criticized the shutdown, asserting that it favors military and Capitol Police funding at the expense of addressing more fundamental issues. He emphasized that he was among just two Democrats to vote in favor of keeping the government functioning.

“I’m not afraid to speak the truth, and if it results in consequences, that’s a risk I’m willing to take,” he told Sean Hannity. “It’s unacceptable to shut down our government.”

This perspective follows Fetterman labeling the ongoing 22-day shutdown a “failure.” He noted concerns regarding upcoming cuts to vital government programs, which resonate particularly with Pennsylvania constituents.

“I will not vote to end SNAP, which benefits millions in my state and nationwide,” he asserted.

Nearly 42 million Americans depend on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) to access nutritious food. As it’s largely funded by the federal government, continuing shutdown could jeopardize this support.

“With the government closed, that essential aid will be halted,” Fetterman explained. “We can’t allow any form of widespread food insecurity to occur.”

Fetterman also criticized the vocal rhetoric from party leaders, specifically targeting past comments labeling former President Trump as a “fascist,” saying that such language fosters extreme actions.

“I won’t engage in that kind of divisive comparison,” he remarked. “If that’s the strategy for winning, I want no part of it.”

He warned that such inflammatory discourse only leads the country astray, exclaiming, “We’ve lost the plot.” Fetterman insisted on remaining respectful towards fellow citizens, refusing to liken anyone to historical oppressors.

Calling for both parties to seek common ground, he expressed a willingness to use his influence to advocate for his beliefs. “It’s natural to remember that we all need each other,” he concluded.
