San Diego car accident claims the life of police officer Lauren Craven

Late Monday evening, a dedicated police officer in California tragically lost her life while responding to a serious highway accident.

Officer Lauren Craven from La Mesa was involved in a fatal rollover crash on Interstate 8, northeast of San Diego, shortly before 10:30 p.m., officials reported.

The 25-year-old officer was on her way back from the San Diego Central Jail when she noticed a multi-vehicle collision on a busy stretch of highway, about eight miles west of La Mesa.

After reporting the incident via radio, she moved closer to the overturned vehicle.

It was then that Craven was struck by another vehicle, which caused a chain reaction involving the car from the initial incident.

The driver of the overturned car, identified as 19-year-old Devionte Morris, was confirmed by NBC7 San Diego.

Other individuals involved in the accident were taken to local medical facilities for treatment.

The California Highway Patrol is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the original crash.

The young officer, who had celebrated her birthday on October 7, is remembered fondly for her acts of bravery.

“Officer Craven’s last actions truly reflected her commitment to serving others and ensuring their safety, which was a hallmark of her daily life,” the La Mesa Police Department shared on Facebook. “She was known for her tenacity, courage, and compassion—qualities that inspired her colleagues and uplifted her community.”

Craven’s interest in law enforcement stemmed from “a traumatic experience she endured in college,” according to her father, David Craven. He mentioned that his daughter had a strong desire to make a difference for others. “Lauren often reflected on our differences and decided she wanted to dedicate her life to being a supportive police officer for those who needed help,” he recalled.

The following morning, debris and wrecked vehicles were still visible on the highway after the incident.

David expressed his pride in his daughter for turning her greatest fear into a way to motivate herself. “Nothing could stop her, and it truly didn’t,” he remarked.

Craven had joined the La Mesa Police Department in February 2024, having attended the police academy twice to realize her dream of becoming an officer.

During the recruitment process for the LMPD, she stated, “There was no doubt that helping others is my passion, and being a police officer is my calling.”

“That was Lauren; that’s how she served and how she’ll be remembered,” noted La Mesa Police Chief Ray Sweeney at a press conference.

Craven had last spoken with her family the night of her passing while driving to work in Oregon.

“This will be a long, difficult journey, but sharing this is important to show what was in Lauren’s heart and the kindness she showed to everyone,” said David Craven.

The heartbreaking moment when two police officers came to inform him about his daughter’s death is etched in his memory. “They asked, ‘Can we come in?’ I immediately inquired if they were talking about my daughter Lauren. When they confirmed, my heart sank. ‘Is she dead?’ I asked,” David recalled.

The elder Craven, who described his daughter as his best friend, has mixed feelings regarding the police examination process she underwent. “What if she had not passed? I would have still loved her, but she wouldn’t have realized her dreams. Not many people achieve the joy of doing what they love, and she did,” he concluded.
