Illinois gubernatorial candidate Darren Bailey revealed on Wednesday that he tragically lost his son, daughter-in-law, and two grandchildren in a helicopter accident in Montana.
Bailey, a member of the Republican party, along with his wife, Cindy, shared the heartbreaking news on social media. Their statement confirmed that their son Zachary, his wife Kelsey, and their young children, Vada Rose, who was 12, and 7-year-old Samuel, were killed. Thankfully, their third child, Finn, was not on the helicopter and is safe.
The statement from Bailey’s team expressed their devastation: “Darren and Cindy are heartbroken by this unimaginable loss. They find solace in their faith, family, and the support from countless people who care about them.”
They also expressed gratitude for the kindness shown to them, while emphasizing the need for privacy as they navigate this incredibly difficult period.
The details surrounding the helicopter crash are still unclear.
Bailey is currently challenging Illinois Governor JB Pritzker for the governorship. He previously served in the Illinois State Senate and lost to Pritzker in the 2022 gubernatorial election.
During that campaign, a man named Scott Lennox was charged for allegedly making death threats against Bailey. Lennox, who is 21, faced three felony charges, including intimidation of a public servant and harassment via phone and electronic communication.
Reportedly, Lennox left a voicemail for Bailey that included threats to “mutilate and kill” Republicans, according to local news sources.
Illinois State Police have stated that Lennox used a cell phone to make the threats, and he has reportedly confessed to the crime.
