Illinois GOP gubernatorial candidate experiences loss of four family members in helicopter accident

Tragic Loss for GOP Candidate Darren Bailey

Republican gubernatorial candidate from Illinois, Darren Bailey, is mourning the loss of four family members in a helicopter crash in Montana.

His campaign confirmed the heartbreaking news on Thursday, stating that the crash took place on Wednesday. Bailey’s son, Zachary, his daughter-in-law, Kelsey, and two of Kelsey’s children, Vada Rose, 12, and Samuel, 7, tragically lost their lives. Fortunately, a third child, Finn, who is 10 years old, was not on the helicopter and is reported to be safe.

“Darren and Cindy, his wife, are heartbroken by this unimaginable loss. They derive some comfort from their faith, family ties, and the prayers from those who care for them. They are deeply thankful for the outpouring of support and request privacy as they navigate this difficult period,” the campaign statement indicated.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has started an investigation into the incident, though it remains unclear if it pertains to the same crash that affected Bailey’s family. Local authorities, specifically the Carter County Sheriff’s Office, reported that the helicopter went down near the town, but the details surrounding the accident remain uncertain.

Bailey, who previously lost a race against Governor J.B. Pritzker in 2022, had announced his intention to run again as the Republican candidate for the 2026 gubernatorial election.

Pritzker expressed his sorrow over the tragic accident on Thursday morning, saying he was “devastated.”

“Our prayers and deepest condolences go out to Mr. and Mrs. Bailey during this time of grief,” the governor stated. “May the memory of your loved one be a blessing.”

“Please keep the Bailey family in your thoughts and prayers during this unimaginably difficult time,” added Illinois Republican Party Chair Kathy Salvi in a statement.

Darren Bailey is not only known as a farmer but also has a background in politics, having served two years in the Illinois House of Representatives followed by a term in the Senate.
