In a recent CNN interview, Texas Democrat Jolanda Jones dismissed Michelle Obama’s well-known saying, “When they go low, we go high.” Instead, she expressed a more aggressive stance towards her political opponents, stating she would “cross their necks.” She elaborated, saying, “If you punch me in the face, I’m not gonna punch you back. I’m gonna punch you across the neck,” illustrating her point with a dramatic gesture on “OutFront.” Jones insisted that Democrats need a more forceful approach, asserting they must strike hard enough that opponents don’t retaliate.
Jones, a candidate for the U.S. House seat in Houston following the death of Rep. Sylvester Turner, generated interest from host Erin Burnett when she declared, “If Republicans lose heart, I’m going to the gutter.” Her critique was directed at the need for Democrats to stop being overly pleasant, particularly regarding redistricting matters.
“If they’re going to wipe us out in Texas, they need to wipe out all the Republicans in New York, California, and Illinois,” she stated, emphasizing her point. Jones argued that Democrats are at risk of alienating crucial voter demographics, such as Black and low-income voters, who are looking for leadership that is willing to fight.
Alongside her commentary on Obama’s philosophy, Jones suggested that the political climate has changed dramatically under former President Trump, making such a positive approach less effective. “I never subscribed to it,” she admitted, explaining that, in her experience, a more combative strategy is necessary in today’s political environment.
Ultimately, she conveyed that she is determined to advocate fiercely for her constituents, stating, “No one is going to make me feel bad for fighting for the people I represent.” Jones also warned viewers that the country is “under attack,” indicating a strong sense of urgency for Democratic leaders to take action.
As of now, Jones’ office has not provided any comments on this interview.
