National Geographic has unveiled its yearly World’s Best Travel list, showcasing exciting destinations to explore globally. This time, four locations in the United States have made the cut for 2026, including stunning landscapes and historical sites in North Dakota, Oklahoma, Hawaii, and Pennsylvania.
Here’s a closer look at what these U.S. states have to offer for travelers next year.
Badlands, North Dakota
The badlands in North Dakota are famous for their dramatic scenery, featuring expansive hills, prairie grasslands, canyons, and unique rock formations. This region is also home to Theodore Roosevelt National Park. A notable highlight is the upcoming Theodore Roosevelt National Library, set to open on July 4, 2026. Interestingly, it was in these badlands that President Roosevelt found solace back in 1883 while hunting bison, an experience that significantly influenced his conservation views.
Next summer, the library will be a striking structure perched on a butte in Medora. It’s said to include interactive exhibits detailing Roosevelt’s life and journeys, along with a walkable rooftop adorned with native plants that will connect to a 2.1-mile trail leading into the national park.
Route 66, Oklahoma
The iconic Route 66, which spans from Chicago to Santa Monica, will hit its 100th anniversary in 2026. Travelers are encouraged to experience this historic route, specifically through Oklahoma, where a resurgence of interest in Americana is evident. In the last four years, over $82 million has been spent by the Oklahoma Department of Transportation to revitalize approximately 400 miles of the route, restoring neon signs and roadside attractions, among other enhancements.
As you journey down 11th Street in the Meadow Gold District, you’ll find a variety of independent shops, quirky gift stores, and art galleries. The Oklahoma Route 66 Museum in Clinton showcases a vintage diner and historical exhibits, providing a nostalgic glimpse into the road’s storied past.
Maui, Hawaii
Hawaii continues to be a peaceful haven for vacationers, drawing many with its beautiful beaches and turquoise waters. However, the recent wildfires in Maui were devastating, causing billions in damage and fatalities, particularly in Lahaina, a once-bustling beachfront community. On a more hopeful note, many businesses have reopened and are encouraging visitors to support recovery efforts.
Even though tourist numbers are lower for now, this offers a unique chance to explore without crowds. The Grand Wailea Hotel has just launched the largest spa in Hawaii, and the Wailea Beach Resort has improved its facilities, adding an exclusive wellness space with an infinity pool. Additionally, there are volunteer opportunities for guests to join in on beach clean-ups and native plant restoration activities.
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Pittsburgh has been spotlighted for its vibrant cultural scene and numerous museums. The Carnegie Museum of Art and Natural History is a must-see, especially since the Carnegie International, a major contemporary art event, will return in 2026. Notably, the Andy Warhol Museum in the Pop District is undergoing a $60 million expansion that will introduce a new performing arts venue.
Moreover, the National Aviary, home to numerous birds in free-flight habitats, is considered a “highly underrated tourist attraction” by National Geographic. With 90 neighborhoods, Pittsburgh is in the midst of significant redevelopment, encompassing updates to its downtown dining district and public parks.
