Severe Sanctions Against Russia: A Move by Team Trump
Team Trump deserves credit for imposing what are arguably the toughest sanctions on Russia to date. This is, perhaps, a strategy to convey to President Vladimir Putin that clinging to conflict isn’t the solution.
The sanctions target Russia’s major energy firms, Rosneft and Lukoil, indicating that the White House is ready to take action against the Kremlin for its inflexibility. This follows a call between President Trump and President Putin where, unsurprisingly, Russia reaffirmed its stance on its unrealistic demands.
Disrupting the energy sector strikes at the core of Putin’s wartime economy.
The European Union swiftly aligned with Trump’s approach, introducing its own sanctions which included a ban on Russian liquefied natural gas imports. This move directly impacts Putin financially, seeing as Europe is the largest consumer of that gas.
This coordinated effort by the U.S. aims to pressure Moscow effectively, hitting them where it truly hurts.
Of course, Trump has joked about sending Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine, suggesting they require extensive training, which has raised concerns in Kiev about how this could affect Russian negotiations.
Yet, I think Trump is justified here; he seems to be cautious about potential unintended deaths from U.S. weapons ending up in the wrong hands within Ukraine.
There’s a bit of uncertainty, yet Ukraine recently struck a Russian chemical facility with a British Storm Shadow missile, demonstrating its ability to perform significant attacks without needing a Tomahawk.
On another note, President Trump recently denied claims from a Wall Street Journal report that suggested the U.S. had eased restrictions on Ukraine’s use of long-range missiles against targets in Russia before the attack. But, I’m not sure this will alleviate Putin’s growing paranoia about U.S. intentions.
It’s plausible that Trump could intensify the pressure.
He could aim at Putin’s other revenue streams, specifically targeting the oligarchs who have benefited from their Kremlin affiliations while fueling Moscow’s military endeavors.
These relationships have allowed some oligarchs to profit off the suffering in Ukraine, amassing wealth through increased arms production.
The EU’s sanctions were a significant setback for these oligarchs, restricting their access to funds and limiting their travel in Europe.
The Trump administration should consider tightening sanctions on Putin’s allies, expanding the targeted lists, freezing assets, and closing any loopholes that allow middlemen to operate on behalf of the oligarchs.
For instance, it’s peculiar that Elena Baturina and Vladimir Yevtushenkov, who have ties to Hunter Biden, were removed from Biden’s sanctions list.
The message needs to be clear to President Putin: he and his associates shouldn’t expect to gain from the civilized world.
He must come to realize that there’s no viable path forward if he clings to the absurd notion of erasing Ukraine.
America and its allies need to maintain this pressure until Moscow concedes.
