Tyrod Taylor discusses the status of his knee injury

Quarterback Situation at Jets’ Facility

On Thursday, attention remained focused on the Jets’ quarterback scenario, particularly as Tyrod Taylor has returned to health. This development is significant, considering he was limited in practice for the second day in a row after undergoing arthroscopic surgery for a knee injury sustained during training camp. He mentioned that he took a “helmet blow” to his knee while filling in during the second half of the recent loss to the Panthers.

“I’m just going to take it one day at a time,” Taylor stated, noting his efforts with team trainers. He anticipates being physically ready to play this weekend.

The uncertainty surrounding his participation, however, remains a topic. Head coach Aaron Glenn has not clarified whether Taylor or Justin Fields will start, as he wants to prepare both players.

Interestingly, both quarterbacks expressed that they’re in the dark about Glenn’s ultimate decision. Offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand has left that matter solely to Glenn.

While Fields may have a more lucrative contract and be younger, Taylor, at 36, displays a capacity to run the offense more effectively.

Following a strong performance against the Buccaneers in Week 3, Taylor struggled in the latter half against the Panthers, facing two interceptions and completing 10 out of 22 passes for 126 yards. Although he critiqued a particular underthrow from Allen Lazard, he felt the overall performance was acceptable.

“I often critique myself… Did I make the right read? Was my focus where it should be? Am I giving my receiver the best chance post-catch?” he reflected. “I believe I’ve done well, but there’s always room for improvement.”

Improvement is certainly needed for an offense that has not scored a first-half touchdown in the last six games, with no touchdowns in the past two games either.

Engstrand shared that the focus for the offense this week is about “finishing.” This includes finishing plays, drives, and ultimately games—something that has eluded them during this challenging start.

“We’re working on completing things,” Engstrand added. “This covers every play, from the snap to the whistle. It’s crucial for us to end drives with touchdowns rather than settling for field goals.”

They’ve faced five games this year with just a one-score difference, having had three chances to win in the closing minutes but unfortunately came up short each time.

In terms of injuries, Garrett Wilson missed practice again due to a knee issue after not participating in the last game. Tight end Mason Taylor has joined the injury report with a quadriceps issue, though edge rusher Jermaine Johnson II and cornerback Quantez Stigers have upgraded to full practice participation after being limited.

In a separate move, the Jets have released offensive lineman Esa Paul.
