Jets Face Tough Challenge Against Bengals
The Jets have a lot to tackle right now, especially considering their winless record and uncertainty regarding their starting quarterback.
This weekend, they’ll face the Bengals and one of the league’s top wide receivers, Ja’Marr Chase. Unfortunately for the Jets, they might be missing their best cornerback.
Chase is a serious threat, leading the league in receptions for the second year running. However, it seems like Sauce Gardner, who hasn’t practiced this week due to a concussion sustained in last week’s loss to the Panthers, will likely be sidelined.
To put it in perspective, Jets wide receiver has made 65 catches this season, while Chase has 58.
Defensive coordinator Steve Wilkes commented on Chase, calling him “a potential Hall of Famer,” and emphasized the difficulty in limiting his impact. “You want to beat him, but it’s tough. You have to get creative in limiting his touches,” he added, acknowledging Chase’s exceptional talent.
Stevens, who spent four seasons with the Ravens, is familiar with Chase from their AFC North matchups. He revealed he’s excited for the matchup, recalling Chase’s remarkable performance against the Steelers where he had 16 catches for 161 yards.
“He’s one of the best in the game,” Stevens said confidently, noting his three-year, $36 million contract signed in the offseason.
As for Stevens, he’s adapting well to his new team. He mentioned, “I feel like I’m playing my game,” suggesting a growing comfort in his new role.
If Gardner doesn’t play, it may fall to rookie Azaleai Thomas to step in against either Chase or Tee Higgins. Higgins has had a solid couple of weeks, catching 11 passes for 158 yards and a touchdown.
Thomas, the third-round rookie out of Florida State, mentioned he prepares every week as if he’s playing, though he hasn’t officially been named a starter yet. “I want to face the top players,” he expressed, eager for the challenge.
This certainly poses an opportunity, but it’s also risky. Chase has shown he can be unstoppable regardless of who’s throwing the ball. After Joe Burrow went down early in the season, other quarterbacks, including Jake Browning and Joe Flacco, have stepped in. While the Bengals have had their ups and downs, Chase has remained a consistent performer.
On the other side, the Jets’ defense has improved, allowing just 26 points over their last two outings. Wilkes expressed pride in their recent performance, although it’s worth noting those games were against less formidable offenses led by players like Bo Nix and Bryce Young.
Facing Flacco, Chase, and Higgins will present a much stiffer test for the Jets, especially with Gardner out. His absence is felt deeply, as he was considered one of the league’s elite cornerbacks, often tasked with covering the opposition’s best receivers.
The Jets are hopeful they can rise to the occasion. Wilkes remarked, “We know Chase and Higgins are outstanding players. Still, I have complete faith in our team to get the job done.”
