Schumer Criticizes Trump’s Trade Decisions
On Friday, Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer from New York expressed strong disapproval of President Trump’s decision to halt trade discussions with Canada. He pledged to push Republicans to reconsider a resolution aimed at eliminating Trump’s tariffs on the northern neighbor, insisting that “the madness has to stop.”
Schumer argued that Trump’s tariffs are causing American families to face higher prices on imported items like timber and beef. He intends to bring this matter back to the Senate floor for further discussion.
“Americans cannot afford Donald Trump’s tantrums as he imposes price gouging tariffs,” Schumer stated. “These constant outbursts end up costing real money.” He highlighted that failure to negotiate tariff reductions with Canada means Americans will, on average, pay an additional $1,300 as prices for essentials rise.
“The madness has to stop,” he reiterated, committing to a vote next week on a proposal to “repeal President Trump’s detrimental tariffs on Canada and other nations.”
He also noted, “Americans will see if the Republican Party prioritizes Donald Trump over the average family.”
In April, the Senate had previously passed a resolution suspending Trump’s tariffs on Canada, with support from four Republicans: Sens. Rand Paul, Mitch McConnell, Lisa Murkowski, and Susan Collins. However, the vote was ultimately unsuccessful.
This effort seems largely symbolic, as the House is unlikely to contemplate a resolution that would counteract Trump’s authority to impose tariffs on Canada. Even if such a measure cleared Congress, it would likely face a presidential veto and require a two-thirds majority in both chambers to be overturned.
Schumer’s remarks came after Trump ended negotiations with Canada, prompted by an advertisement showcasing past comments from former President Ronald Reagan about the dangers of long-term tariffs. The president claimed that Canada was using the ad to “obstruct” the Supreme Court’s consideration of the legality behind his use of a state of emergency to implement tariffs on foreign trade partners.
“Tariffs are critical to the national security and economy of the United States. In light of their egregious actions, all trade negotiations with Canada are hereby terminated,” Trump posted on Truth Social.
