Florida Man Arrested Over Prank Gone Wrong
A man from Florida has been taken into custody after allegedly threatening a teenager with a gun during a ding-dong ditch prank in his neighborhood.
This unexpected situation unfolded around 8 p.m. on October 16, when Santiago Cairo, 40, noticed a group at his front door and thought they were attempting to break in, as reported by local news.
Feeling threatened, Cairo armed himself and called 911 before eventually confronting a 14-year-old boy outside his home.
In police statements, Cairo claimed that he didn’t point the gun at the boy but held it in a “low position” while waiting for officers to arrive.
However, the teenager’s account of events suggests a different narrative. He acknowledged leaving Cairo’s property but stated that the man confronted him with both a flashlight and a gun, shouting that he had “put his hands on the wrong guy.” According to him, he felt genuinely threatened when Cairo ordered him to kneel and even attempted to push him to the ground.
Further investigation revealed no actual attempt to break into Cairo’s home. The homeowner himself admitted to authorities that he “overreached” in his response.
Cairo’s attorney maintained that no gun was pointed at anyone nor was anyone physically harmed. They didn’t comment immediately when approached for more information.
Initially arrested on charges of aggravated assault with a firearm, Cairo has since been released on a $10,000 bond.
One of Cairo’s neighbors, Mary Elizabeth Hall, offered her support for him, though she expressed her disappointment regarding the incident. She recounted seeing a mother driving away with her kids while her neighbor was being handcuffed. Hall noted that car break-ins had been increasing in the area, leading her to wonder if the young prankster was up to something more than just a prank. “My neighbor did the right thing, but the outcome wasn’t right,” she concluded.
Cairo is scheduled to face a judge next month. Hall remarked, “I hope this young man learns a very serious lesson as a result, and may my neighbor Santiago’s name be cleared.”
