On Thursday, a sizable group of pro-immigration demonstrators encircled a unit of ICE officers in vehicles, allegedly igniting large fireworks and throwing rocks among other hostile actions.
The Department of Homeland Security has issued a warning, stating that the increasingly aggressive measures taken by Chicago protesters won’t sway them from enforcing the law.
This incident reportedly took place in the Little Village area at the crossroads of 27th Street and Whipple.
Footage reveals the crowd encircling the ICE officers and their trucks, shouting threats. When officers attempted to leave, their path was obstructed by a big truck, prompting the crowd to heighten their aggression.
The Department of Homeland Security also referenced the altercation in a post on X.
DHS asserted that “law and order will prevail in Chicago.”
“The day before, Border Patrol agents executed enforcement activities near 27th and Whipple Streets. An officer became stranded in a large vehicle when approximately 75 to 100 rioters encircled law enforcement, prompting police to establish a perimeter. The rioters then fired at the officers using civilian-grade fireworks,” the department stated in a Friday communication.
“A Border Patrol transport van, carrying undocumented individuals attempting to reach safety, was subsequently targeted. Agents managed to secure the van and enter the border. The mob turned increasingly aggressive, advancing toward the agents and hurling rocks and other items at them, injuring Chief Greg Bovino with one projectile,” the statement added.
“Border Patrol agents issued several warnings to disperse, indicating that chemical agents would be deployed if their instructions went unheeded. Measures were taken to control the crowd, leading to some arrests. The agents utilized their training appropriately. The deployment of chemical munitions complied fully with CBP policy and was crucial for the safety of both law enforcement and the public.”
