The removal of Prince Andrew’s coat of arms and flag from Windsor Castle is viewed by experts as yet another blow to the already tarnished royal family.
In a confirmation to Fox News Digital, Buckingham Palace noted that the flag was taken down following Andrew’s recent loss of title and honors.
Royal commentator Helena Chard remarked that this action serves as an additional humiliation for Andrew. She expressed, “His disgrace has reached a low point. The royal family is clearly trying to distance itself from him to protect the monarchy. It’s almost like he’s being quietly pushed out.” She added that the removal is meant to curb any further public backlash and to signal that the Royal Family adheres to a moral standard. This must be particularly painful for Andrew, especially given his memories of his mother, the late Queen Elizabeth II, resting in St George’s Chapel, a place he considered a refuge.
Reportedly, the flag’s removal traditionally indicates serious offenses such as high treason or rebellion against the monarchy.
Royal expert Hilary Fordwich commented that this action is “extremely rare” and signifies a serious breach, stating it is usually reserved for significant transgressions involving the royal family. She emphasized, “This goes beyond mere symbolism; it’s a substantial step by the family, with Prince William at the helm, to create distance from Andrew.”
Richard Fitzwilliams, another royal commentator, mentioned that it might be considered fortuitous that Andrew’s banner was discreetly taken down from St George’s Chapel, which holds historical significance for Britain’s elite chivalric order.
On October 17, Andrew released a statement following the publication of parts of Virginia Giuffre’s posthumous memoir, where she alleged being trafficked by Jeffrey Epstein at 17 and having encounters with Andrew.
He stated, “After discussions with the King and my family, I’ve concluded that these ongoing accusations are obstructing His Majesty’s work and the Royal Family’s efforts. My priority is to my family and country. I reaffirm my decision from five years ago to withdraw from public life.” He also mentioned, “With the King’s approval, we feel a further step is necessary. I will no longer use my title or honors. I continue to deny the allegations against me.”
