US Navy Aircraft Crash in South China Sea

Two aircraft from the USS Nimitz, specifically a Seahawk helicopter and an F/A-18 Super Hornet fighter jet, crashed Sunday during separate routine operations in the South China Sea. Fortunately, all five crew members onboard were rescued and reported to be in stable condition. The Navy is currently investigating the incidents.

The U.S. Pacific Fleet, which is the Navy’s largest operational command, noted that the first incident involved an MH-60R Seahawk helicopter from Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron 73’s “Battle Cats.” This crash occurred around 2:54 p.m. local time while the helicopter was performing standard operations from the Nimitz.

A search and rescue team from Carrier Strike Group 11, which was operating with the Nimitz, promptly began recovery efforts. They successfully retrieved all three crew members from the water, who were later transferred back to their ship for medical evaluations.

Following the helicopter incident, about 30 minutes later, a Nimitz F/A-18F Super Hornet from the 22nd Strike Fighter Squadron’s Fighting Redcocks also went down in the South China Sea.

Rescue teams again acted quickly, recovering the two crew members from the Super Hornet, both of whom managed to escape before the aircraft impacted the water. They were taken to the Nimitz and are also reported to be in stable condition.

According to the U.S. Pacific Fleet, all five service members involved in these incidents are safe. The specific causes of the crashes remain under investigation, and details about weather conditions or any potential mechanical issues have not been disclosed.

The USS Nimitz, the Navy’s oldest active-duty aircraft carrier, is currently deployed in the Indo-Pacific region as part of Carrier Strike Group 11. This ship typically conducts freedom of navigation and maritime security operations in the South China Sea, an area that has been increasingly tense between the United States and China.
