Tragic Semi-Truck Crash in Southern California

On Tuesday, a devastating semi-truck crash in Southern California claimed the lives of three people, two of whom have been identified as Clarence and Lisa Nelson, an assistant basketball coach at Pomona High School and his wife. They were pronounced dead at the scene.

The San Bernardino County Coroner’s Office confirmed their identities, indicating Clarence Nelson, 76, and Lisa Nelson, 69, were residents of Fontana. State Senator Susan Rubio expressed her heartbreak over the incident in a social media post, noting, “Our community was deeply saddened by the tragic events that occurred in Ontario this week. I am heartbroken to learn that two of the lives lost were from my district: Pomona High School basketball coach Clarence Nelson and his wife Lisa.”

As a teacher, Rubio mentioned her awareness of how such losses resonate through the school community and extended thoughts to their families and the Pomona Unified School District, recognizing the collective grief in the aftermath.

The alleged driver responsible for the crash is Jashanpreet Singh, a 21-year-old illegal immigrant from India. He crossed the southern border in 2022 and has been accused of driving while intoxicated, causing the fatal accident on I-10 in San Bernardino County. According to federal officials, Singh had previously been encountered by Border Patrol agents but was released while awaiting an immigration inspection.

Reports indicate that Singh’s reckless driving resulted in him crashing his big rig into slow-moving traffic, resulting in three fatalities and numerous injuries. Dashcam footage captured the horrifying moment he failed to hit the brakes before colliding with vehicles. A toxicology test revealed Singh was impaired at the time of the accident.

This incident has added to concerns surrounding illegal immigrant truck drivers. In a related case, an individual named Harijinder Singh, who crossed the border illegally in 2018, obtained a commercial driver’s license and was involved in a crash that took three lives in Florida last August. Investigations revealed he had not passed certain proficiency tests.

The crash raises significant questions about road safety and immigration policies, especially as the Trump administration recently threatened to withhold federal highway safety grants from California due to non-compliance with language standards for truck drivers.
