Newsom and Harris Open to 2028 Presidential Runs
Recently, both California Governor Gavin Newsom and former Vice President Kamala Harris hinted at the possibility of running for president in 2028. Newsom remarked, “If you don’t consider it, you’re lying,” when asked about his thoughts on a potential candidacy following the 2026 midterm elections. He acknowledged that he doesn’t really know if he’ll run but reflected on his own educational challenges. He conveyed that someone like him, who faced difficulties in school, pursuing a presidency seems a bit far-fetched, yet he’s curious about who will emerge in 2028.
Newsom has been mentioned as a prominent Democratic candidate, especially after the tumultuous 2024 election cycle where President Joe Biden dropped out, raising concerns about his capabilities. During that time, Trump managed to secure seven critical swing states, ultimately winning both the popular and Electoral College votes.
On the other hand, Kamala Harris recently mentioned in a BBC interview that she hasn’t ruled out seeking the presidency in 2028. With a background in California politics, including her previous roles as district attorney, attorney general, and senator, she has had quite the political journey. “It’s not over yet,” she stated, emphasizing her commitment to a life of service.
Harris confidently asserted that her grandchildren will witness the first female president, perhaps hinting that she could be that individual. Interestingly, she pointed out that she doesn’t typically follow polling data, and dismissed suggestions that she might be seen as an outsider in the next election cycle.
Referring to her past experiences, Harris noted, “If I had listened to the polls, I wouldn’t be where I am today,” highlighting her belief in standing firm against public perception.
The Democratic Party appears to be in a tight spot as it looks for its next leader, especially after the challenges of the 2024 election. Harris even released a memoir detailing her brief campaign, which included criticisms aimed at Biden, further exposing divisions within the party.
Both Newsom and Harris are established opponents of Trump, who has regularly critiqued their policies. Trump, currently serving his second term, expressed interest in Newsom’s potential run but suggested that the California high-speed rail project could hinder his chance at the presidency.
In Trump’s words, he noted, “I want him to run for president” but doubted Newsom would do so because of the ongoing issues with the rail project, among other reasons.
Fox News Digital reached out to both Newsom and Harris for comment on their remarks regarding the 2028 presidential prospect but has yet to receive any responses.
