Hecklers Disrupt Governor Hochul at Mamdani Rally in Queens
Supporters of Zoran Mamdani, the Socialist Party’s candidate for mayor, were vocal in their discontent during a rally attended by New York Governor Kathy Hochul on Sunday, according to video footage.
Hochul had endorsed Mamdani last month, emphasizing that he had “listened to leaders who share my commitment to a New York where our children can grow up safely.”
“I’ve had open discussions with him over the months. We’ve not always agreed, but I believe he shares my vision for a New York where kids can thrive in their communities while every family has opportunities,” she stated.
She expressed her support for those aiming to make New York City more affordable, reiterating this goal.
With Election Day approaching on November 4, Hochul’s presence at the rally drew mixed reactions, as the crowd frequently interrupted her speeches with chants of “tax the rich!”
According to reports, Hochul had previously dismissed Mamdani’s proposal for a 2% income tax on Big Apple residents earning over $1 million annually and a rise in the corporate tax rate.
When questioned about her stance on his tax initiatives earlier this year, she unequivocally responded “no.”
Additionally, an error in pronouncing Mamdani’s name didn’t sit well with some attendees, which fueled further backlash during the event.
Representative Elise Stefanik was among those observing, commenting on the challenging situation for Hochul, referring to her as “the most hated governor in the nation.”
Despite the interruptions, Hochul continued her speech, alleging that the current administration—”led by Donald Trump and Republicans”—is undermining the city and state. Yet, the hecklers persisted, prompting her to acknowledge their presence, asking, “Do you want to see Zoran or not?” This, too, earned her more criticism for mispronouncing his name again. Ultimately, Mamdani took the stage and embraced Hochul, despite her lack of endorsement in his gubernatorial campaign.
