Indiana Governor Calls for Special Session on Redistricting
Indiana’s Republican Governor Mike Brown announced his intention to convene a special session aimed at safeguarding the interests of Hoosiers in congressional representation. He emphasized that this effort is crucial to counteract influences from other states that might dilute Indiana’s voice in Washington.
As the nation gears up for the 2026 midterm elections, various states are re-evaluating their congressional districts, with Democrats poised to gain three seats, thus disrupting Republican dominance in the House.
Brown’s announcement follows significant changes in congressional mappings from different states. For instance, Texas Republicans managed to secure a new map that favors them by creating five additional districts. In response, California’s Democrats have proposed a new map that could potentially establish five districts with a Democratic majority, contingent on voter approval of Proposition 50 on November 4.
Several states are currently evaluating their congressional maps:
- In Missouri, recently inaugurated Republican Governor Mike Kehoe has signed a new congressional map into law.
- Kansas’s Republican State Senate President Ty Masterson shared that they have gathered enough signatures to initiate a special session focused on redistricting.
- North Carolina’s legislature concluded a Republican-led session where a new congressional map was passed, potentially increasing Republican House seats.
- Virginia Democrats are reportedly preparing to initiate their own redistricting efforts this week.
Governor Brown’s special session for the Indiana General Assembly is set for November 3rd. This decision arises after remarks from Senate President Pro Tempore Roderick Bray, who suggested that “voting is not about redistricting.”
Some view Brown’s actions as a newfound resolve among Republicans, who have faced significant pressure from both the White House and their constituents to ensure their success. For example, Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk previously critiqued Republican hesitation, stating that they need to “get tough” in redistricting efforts.
Indiana State Senator Jim Banks remarked on the urgency of revising the districts: “The least we can do is go through the legal process and redistrict Indiana to a 9-0 map,” he stated following Kirk’s tragic death.
Lieutenant Governor Micah Beckwith underscored the importance of resilience within the Republican ranks, urging them to remember their voters and push for a 9-0 map that reflects Indiana’s true interests in Congress.
In response to Governor Brown’s announcement, Indiana House Speaker Todd Huston indicated that the legislature is prepared to engage in further discussions regarding the next steps.
Meanwhile, Attorney General Todd Rokita affirmed his readiness to defend any new congressional map in court once finalized.
