LSU’s Brian Kelly Faces $54 Million Buyout Following Dismissal

The head coach of Louisiana State University, Brian Kelly, is reportedly pursuing a $54 million buyout after the school’s decision to let him go last weekend.

LSU announced that Kelly would no longer be coaching following a disappointing 49-25 defeat to Texas A&M, marking the team’s third loss in four games.

While negotiations regarding his exit are ongoing, sources suggest that Kelly’s contract, which was quite profitable, is at the center of discussions.

Kelly was in just his fourth year of a 10-year, $100 million deal, which included a significant amount guaranteed. He originally signed a $95 million contract with 90 percent guaranteed funds.

In a recent meeting with LSU Athletic Director Scott Woodward, Kelly reportedly mentioned the proposed $54 million buyout. Further complicating matters, Woodward has also indicated that offensive coordinator Joe Sloan should take some responsibility, but Kelly seems to have disagreed with that approach.

Despite the team’s struggles, Kelly defended his position. He remarked, “It’s challenging for a head coach who’s been in this role for four years and has 35 years of experience to think otherwise. But I continue to coach.” He added, “Whether I’m here or not isn’t up to me, but it’s about what I do.”

However, this focus on the situation hasn’t translated into success for LSU. The team currently stands at 5-3 for the season, with a 2-3 record in SEC matchups. Last year, they finished at 9-4, with several losses coming by double-digit margins. During his tenure, Kelly’s record is 34-14, with just one SEC West title achieved in his inaugural season in 2022.

Woodward expressed disappointment in the current state of the team, stating that when Kelly joined LSU, there were high expectations for winning several SEC and national championships. He remarked, “In the end, we didn’t achieve the level of success LSU demands. After last night’s game, I felt it was time for a change.”

He further emphasized, “As a proud alumnus and steward of the athletics program, I won’t compromise our pursuit of excellence or lower our standards.”

If Kelly secures the $54 million buyout, it would surpass the $49 million payout given to James Franklin after his recent ousting at Penn State.
