Government Shutdown Press Conference
During a recent press conference, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) remarked that the current government shutdown, now 28 days in, is a result of Democrats’ fear of far-left activists.
He specifically criticized House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) for blaming Republicans while supporting socialist candidate Zoran Mamdani in the New York City mayoral election. Johnson described this situation as emblematic of the larger issue. He stated that Democrats seem to prioritize appeasing far-left activists over addressing the needs of air traffic controllers, Border Patrol agents, and U.S. military personnel who are facing paycheck disruptions.
“It’s almost as if they fear figures like Mamdani more than the well-being of families impacted by dwindling benefits,” Johnson claimed, adding that their concern lies more with maintaining political power in the upcoming elections than with the real hardships their constituents face.
According to Johnson, the Democrats are willing to endure the political consequences of this shutdown, stating, “They believe this situation somehow benefits them by showing their commitment to the far-left faction.” He concluded that it’s not policy-driven decisions but rather a deep-seated anxiety within the Democratic Party that is perpetuating the shutdown.
He also mentioned that constituents, including union members, are urging Democrats to prioritize reopening the government. Johnson highlighted feedback from the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE), which is calling on Congress to pass a clean continuing resolution.
“Labor is advocating for action, which gives a convenient excuse for Democrats to justify reopening the government,” Johnson suggested.
